Basic Elements is Morningside’s phonics skill building program, providing see-say fluency practice over a series of 59 slices of sub-skills involved in decoding words, including vowel combinations, vowel/consonant combinations, prefixes, suffixes and other word parts. The program uses both real and nonsense words so that the learner cannot rely on previous sight word instruction and recall. After initial instruction in small groups, students practice each sub-skill until it is fluent (automatic, second-nature).
